We seem to remember that Paul 'DJ Q' Flynn once was a big promise in the house sector. During the late 90s the man seemed a credible non-Detroit alternative for funky techno, a bit like his label-mate Milton Jackson nowadays. But that was then, this is now. And now we are listening to DJ Q's third album, only to come to the conclusion that the man is grimly following the same dead trail so many house producers have embarked upon in recent years. We think that is a shame, because the man can still hit them hard, if he wants to. Opener 'The Birth of a Beautiful Thing' is an example of the man's immense talent and ranks easily with his previous work. Never-ending synth-washing intro, latin and disco sensibilities neatly synched together and heart-aching keys to top it off: a beautiful thing indeed. The same goes roughly for 'Things Will Never Change', a Larry Heard-influenced love song with Tyrone Palmer on vocals that would not blush in Jori Hulkkonen's distinguished company. 'Fog Bound', too, is a calm yet skilful tech-house chugger that follows the misty trails 16B set out. 'Bitchslapped' will undoubtedly work on the floor, but its pre-nineties Todd Terry rave-stabs sound mysteriously outdated for what should be post-millennial house. But from then on the quality curve goes down. And steeply, for that matter. 'System 600' is 100% pure, uncut latin house…shit. As is the stale soft disco of 'Over U Now'. 'Feel It' (surely deserves a prize for the most original title in years) is just plain bad, while the electro-with-flute of 'Your Move' is a pairing experiment gone ugly, instead of the intended cheeky move. Same goes for the meek downtempo jazz house of 'Season's End' and, let's face the music, the rest of them: it's house, but it's not very deep. As so often we must conclude that a few brilliant tracks do not make a proper album.
