This one's a bit of delayed review since the album is from autumn 1999. But back than this album was almost completely ignored and I think this album deserves better. Who or what is Faultline? This is the project from David Kosten, maybe some people know him as producer/ arranger/ keyboardplayer/FXman on Ben Christophers album 'My Beautiful Demon', an album that was taken to a slightly higher level due to the creative use of beats and keyboards.
Last year he released his own project as well, Faultline, and the music is absolutely not comparable to Ben Christophers. Better think of a collaboration between Aphex Twin and Philip Glass, or The Third Eye Foundation and Steve Reich. On 'Closer Colder' acoustic strings are equally important as distorted jungle-beats, and a muted trumpet can be easily connected with an electronic soundscape. Ever heard minimal music patterns on xylophone combined with a lazy triphop beat? It's all here on this album, and it sounds absolutely amazing. It's all very innovative and unique sounding, with breaks or changes in the songs that even a mad man couldn't predict. I mean, first you'll hear heavy distorted beats and the next second some atonal violin and cello melody.
Matrix said a few months ago that his album 'Sleepwalker' would be perfect mixture between electronic music and acoustic minimalism, but apart from the fact that his album was not really convincing, Faultine did it earlier, better and much more original. And he also included classical and jazz influences. What more could you possibly want?
