Fans of, say, Sigur Rós or Múm will find FS Blumm traversing rather familiar territory on his first full-length, but to say that 'Mondkuchen' is just another release aimed to draw money from instrumental music completists would be wildly off the mark and unfair. FS Blumm most certainly contributes something worthwhile to a genre that suffers, occasionally, from talentless noodling, high-brow rehashes of Dead Can Dance's worst moments, and plain kitschiness (Yes, that can be a Bad Thing.). 'Mondkuchen' is not exactly the darkest instrumental album floating around. This is rather unfortunate, as the tracks definitely attempt to create a melancholic atmosphere by insisting on using minor keys for nearly every drone and every fairytale-esque tinkle flurry. The listener, on the other hand, can't help but feel that within the restraint of these minor keys lies a variety of admirable, uplifting major key pastoral cheerfulness waiting to come out. This clash between intended sadness and a friendlier subtext makes the album somewhat tiring to listen to, as if the listener is forced to struggle along with FS Blumm to keep his lighter moods checked. However, to say that this clash makes 'Mondkuchen' a failed exercise would be rather unfair to the artist. After all, the instrumentation (mostly of the "real", acoustic variety) is quite exceptionally executed and reveals an acute ear for music. In fact, the tracks that manage to steer clear of the insistence to drag things down into a puddle of minor key droning are actually quite listenable and charming. For this reason, "failed" would be an unfair judgment to pass on this album. Assessments such as "still looking for a unique voice" and "shows promise" are much more on the mark. I, for one, am anxious to hear what FS Blumm will cook up on his next release.
