Just after the release of their debut album Blow Your Cover, I attended a gig by this Belgian duo. It was full of energy, with crashing (break)beats and heavy guitars, and all of this fused with a punk attitude. The music reminded me of various bands like Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, Ministry, and Atari Teenage Riot, only this twosome added some slapstick to it.
God = Pushin' is Geschmacksverstärker's second release, and it has all of the ingredients mentioned above. It's one big energy rush. Most songs are moderately fast, with harsh beats, noises, and guitars. There is only one drawback to this album: Every song sounds like a song by some other band. For example, there is a Marilyn Manson kinda song (Me Feel Low), a Prodigy kinda song (Motion Thrills), a Nailbomb kinda song (Know Your Material), and so on. Other bands mimicked are Ministry, KMFDM, Nine Inch Nails, Atari Teenage Riot, and Lard.
Now, there are two possibilities. Either Geschmacksverstärker are being funny here and using parody, or they are simply rip-off artists. It seems they are being funny, and having seen them live once, I give them the benefit of the doubt. Besides that, there is another clue that Geschmacksverstärker are being funny here, namely a featured track entitled Scarfucking: They are definitely referring to a Trent Reznor song.
Either way, this is a nice follow-up to their debut. Not that there is much difference musically, but the new songs are pretty good. This album is recommended to everyone who likes industrial/dance/metal crossover in the vein of the acts Geschmacksverstärker have taken as inspiration. Only, too bad this album had to end with a lousy ballad.
