Basement Apes. That's nowhere near as glamourous as Ridin' The Tiger or
Soaring With The Eagles At Night To Rise With The Pigs In The Morning. And
that, while the new Gluecifer album is their most glamourous effort yet. With
big-bucks production and more varied material, the Norwegian feel-good
rockers go for the major leagues. Biff Malibu, a pumped-up and bronzed rock
god in the body of a slightly overweight civil servant, sings better than
ever, and the more polished production gives him plenty of room to shine.
Captain Poon et al provide him with top-notch ammunition in the form of
instant shout-along, air guitar classics such as Reversed, Brutus, Black
Book Lodge, and most of all Easy Living, a song that just begs for the
cooperation of a stadium crowd on vocals.
But there's more. Gluecifer are tired of the easy living, so they tried some
new things. On Losing End and It Won't Be, it's just a more soulful
approach, but Little Man is psychedelic pop, and I Saw The Stones Move
inclines towards Van Halen. Yes, Van Halen. Some hardcore fans will cringe
at the thought alone, but it is a pretty decent track, though not one of the
strongest of the album. The only experiment that really fails is Round And
Round, an obnoxiously happy, pop rock thing.
Despite this, overall Basement Apes still remains Gluecifer's strongest
album to date. And there's a song called Powertools And Piss on it. That
alone is reason enough to get it.
