The first thought that comes to my mind when I start to play the debut album by Great Lakes is that it really sounds Elephant 6. For the ones who don't know what it is: It is a complete record label that released some classics like Olivia Tremor Control's 'Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume 1', Neutral Milk Hotel's 'In the Aeroplane over the Sea', and 'When Your Heartstrings Break' by Beulah. You can also speak of the Elephant 6 Family because everybody keeps on playing in other bands and cooperating with each other. And, surprise surprise, also Great Lakes are a part of the family, with contributions on their album by members of Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, The Gerbils, and more. And on top of that, Robert Schneider form the Apples In Stereo has control of production duties. Great Lakes from Athens, Georgia, are an eight-piece band with Dan Donahue and Ben Crum as the main songwriters, and their album mainly contains a modern interpretation of the 60s sound with a little addition of some psychedelics. We hear The Beatles on 'Giants and Tigers'; 'An Easy Life', with the unavoidable staccato piano play, and 'Become the Ship' must have been written after listening to 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. It's a shame that these nice songs are accompanied by some superfluous instrumental parts like 'World's Fair Pt. 1' (and 2) and 'A Banana'. But in the Elephant 6 tradition there is a part for some experiment between the Beatlesque pop songs, and it's just a part of the whole. Just like Great Lakes are a part of the whole with a new album you can put next to 'Dream in Sound' by Elf Power, and I guess you might guess what label that album's on. Not really renewing or an obvious adjustment, but just a nice album with some nice songs.
