"White men can't funk" at least that's how the saying goes. But there are notable exceptions. Just take Matthew 'Doctor Rockit' Herbert. When he toured the globe last year promoting his 'Bodily Functions' album, he demonstrated every evening that even empty coke bottles, or the sound of a newspaper being torn, can be used to make irresistably funky music. So just imagine what happens when Matthew 'Happily Married And Raising A Kid' Herbert gets his hands on beautiful tracks to remix. Yes, it gets funky, in his inimitable style. In fact, there are few artists around who have been able to create a personal sound that's so distinctive, you spot their tracks after just a few bars. The ingredients? Strange beats, awkward rhythms, funky basslines, and almost always heavenly vocals all combined with an incredible depth and a touch of melancholy. Now a truckload of his best remixes have been put together on a double album.
Besides being an absolute must for every music lover who's not into wax, it's also a release that once again proves the completely underrated brilliance of Matthew 'Remember Wishmountain' Herbert. Just listen to the way he turned the happy and cheerful Moloko hit 'Sing it Back' into a melancholic gem. It's this kind of genius that makes artists queue up at the doorstep of Matthew 'I Suffer From Fourteen Forms Of Melancholy' Herbert to have him remix their tracks. And it's the same genius that turns this compilation into something that should at least have the same impact as the infamous Kruder & Dorfmeister, and Jazzanova, remix compilations. To demonstrate that Herbert is an even greater genius, just consider the fact that there are still enough excellent Herbert remixes around to fill another double album. The only reason why you shouldn't buy 'Secondhand Sounds' might be the fact you've already spent a fortune buying his remixes on vinyl, but even then...
