Let's get it out straight away: Howie Beck sounds like Elliott Smith. From the first track ('Hollow') to the last track ('The One You Wanted'), Howie Beck seems like Elliott Smith. That in itself is not a problem: Smith is a wonderful artist, and so is Beck. Beck writes great songs, the lyrics are well-considered, and the tunes are in order. Smith was no innovator, why would Beck have to be one? If you present melodies and melancholy this beautiful, you don't need any innovation. Although mainly cheerless and downtempo, it's emotionally charged and engaging late-night listening. No gimmicks, no media-friendly image ploys or bullshit pretentiousness - just approachable, accessible, and invigorating on its very first listen. Floored by the quality of the songs and the sparse, intimate production - most of the material was recorded in Beck's living room - I have to admit Beck has released a near masterwork of pop pleasure. Sure, the eleven songs on 'Hollow' hardly vary widely in style and sound, but the album hangs together with a melodic thread so fine that it's no problem that every song is hardly different than the one before.
