Jack Dangers is the man behind Meat Beat Manifesto, one of the most
influential bands in electro and dance music. Before anyone had ever heard
of the Chemical Brothers or big beats, Meat Beat's Jack Dangers was doing
it. In 1989 MBM released their first full-length, Storm The Studio (Wax
Trax/TVT/PIAS), which was so experimental it gained the band both a lot of
fans and sceptics. If you witness the many breaks on chartbusters like God
O.D., you wonder if and when Madonna will ask Jack Dangers to produce her
next album. But since Dangers is always ten years ahead of his time, and
Madonna just a few months, Dangers and his MBM will probably keep on making
music for the future.
Their 1992 record Satyricon, which is more listenable
than Storm The Studio, the almost-hit single Edge Of No Control, and one of
my all-time favourites, Mindstream. In the mid-1990s, Dangers became better known as "the guy who does all the
remixes for bands like Nine Inch Nails,
Depeche Mode, and Orbital," but in 1996 MBM released their fifth
full-length (and first double-disc set), Subliminal Sandwich.
Again, Dangers set the mark for the future, as evidenced by the influence of that record on dance music. Dangers
continued to create "sample heavy dance"
(as described by some) material on follow-ups like Actual Sounds And
Voices, and this year's release, Variaciones Espectrales.
The difference between MBM releases
and Dangers releases has always been unclear to me, but it probably has
something to do with labels and record companies. Anyway, Variaciones Espectrales continues along
the lines of MBM's post-1995 releases. On one hand, the voices of the
first Sandwich disc have disappeared and the songs are more abstract on
Dangers' new solo release. On the other hand, the "fanning out" compositions
of the second Sandwich disc become songs again. In this way, Variaciones Espectrales blends Meat
Beat's real electro songs (Cancer, Asbestos Lead Asbestos) and the new-ambient
escapades of recent years into new structures. Of course, all songs are once again
multi-layered and give away new sounds at every listen, but the record
is not as groundbreaking as earlier MBM and Dangers releases. But since
this is only a seven-track EP recorded in five days, more sound-innovating
work will probably be featured on the upcoming MBM full-length (Dangers is
recording, as of now). Until that day we have to survive with Dangers'
experimental musique concrète project Tape Music (October, 2001: Tino
Corp), MBM's remix collection Pro File Series V.1 (February 2002: BML),
his mix album Hello Friends (Shadow Records), and his Variaciones Espectrales a way-above-average release,
but only a moderate release for Dangers. But maybe the true value of Variaciones Espectrales will reveal itself
around the year 2010.
