Jim Collins has single-handedly recorded an album full of covers of his favourite artist Gary Numan and released it under the name 'The Church of Gary Numan'. Jim Collins needs to get a life. Being a dedicated Gary Numan fan is already a sign of a slightly twisted mind, but spending months on arranging and recording a tribute album reeks of autism. Or maybe life in Poland, Ohio, is just that boring. The unhealthy amount of dedication Collins has put into building his church does mean that it sounds very good for a hobby (or obsession) project like this, although it wouldn't have hurt if Collins had invested in more expensive keyboards. Collins isn't the best singer in the world either, but considering Motorpsycho's status that's more of a pro than a con in acquiring musical credibility. What really sucks about this church are its psalms. I don't know much about Gary Numan or his music, but hearing what Collins has done to his tracks I sure hope he isn't a god of the vengeful kind. The first few tracks are still sort of alright, but gradually it slides down into a combination of rock guitar and cheap keyboards that sounds a lot like those tracks that are labelled as "a nice uptempo rock track" on CDs that accompany guitar tutorial books. A special mention goes out to the album's closing track, 'Cars (Jazz Mix)', a muzak abhorrence of truly epic proportions. And it's not even jazzy.
