Montreal isn't only the home of Constellation Records and its great artists, it's also the home of avant-garde label Ambiances Magnetiques. And this label operates in the improvisation/ contemporary music scene, with Joane Hétu as the label's director and one of their outstanding artists. On her new album 'Musique d'hiver', she presents a work in four movements that pays hommage to chilly northwest winds, sparkling winter light, the February moon, and the tedium and the exasperation of March. This description sounds ambitious (if not pretentious) and the result is exactly that. Tight, composed pieces are equally important as free improvisation, and the combination of desolate piano and wild and chaotic improvised saxophone parts is superb, and it truly compliments eachother. The touch of folk, chanson and ethnic melodies gives it an original bite, as these are melodies not often heard in this kind of music. Less impressive is the use of vocals. The soundeffects made with voices are good enough, but in the four movements a couple of poems are sung as well, and in a rather theatrical way. That wouldn't be a problem if the voices were from the same level as the instrumentation, but they aren't. The poetic hommages to those chilling winds etc., don't get the treatment they deserve, and the vocals result in boring proclamation. Too bad.
