Live, Mo Solid Gold are a sensation. An unstoppable groove machine with a human tornado for a singer. An all-powerful mix of equal parts Stooges and James Brown. The big question with this kind of band is if they can capture that energy in the studio. The answer is, unfortunately, no. The big problem here is the production. The album sounds thin and commercial. It almost seems like Chrysalis is aiming at the Anastacia buyers with a band that cite MC5, the Stooges, James Brown, and Blues Explosion as favourites. At the helm for most tracks was Steve Lironi. Previous credits include: Hanson, Jon Bon Jovi, and Black Grape. From that last band probably comes the habit of adding lots of background vocals on each track. Mo Solid Gold's K is no Shaun Ryder, however, and he doesn't need them. And when you've got one of those cool 60s organs, you need to let it howl. Same goes, of course, for the guitar. Still, it can always be worse: Lironi's work sounds raw compared to the one track Al Stone produced. The fact that this guy was responsible for the Spice Girls' debut should have been enough to disqualify him. Both producers should buy the Now Time Delegation's 'Watch for Today' to hear what an album like this should sound like. Two tracks were produced by Howie B. Although mainly known as a trip-hop producer, he is the only one who both understands how a guitar needs to sound and that K doesn't need the help of all those background singers. Just compare the sound of 'Spooky Too' with the other tracks and note the difference. The other track he produced is the atmospheric ballad 'Motorway'. Because that's something that still stands: Underneath the MOR production there are good and some great songs that. Single 'Personal Saviour' is an example. And 'Prince of the New Wave'. And there are soulful ballads, like the aforementioned 'Motorway' and 'Miss America in Space'. Seems like there's only one solution: Go see Mo Solid Gold live!
