Two tracks on this release by dubtech meisters Monolake, oddly enough entitled "ice" and "stratosphere". "Ice" actually does have a certain iciness to it - you'll find the usual dub heavy rhythm track augmented with short, resonated puffs and a background drone that consists of slow breathing and a muffled underwater organ. Of course I'm not implying that listening to this track will take you to the North Pole at once, but the title is definitely well chosen. "Stratosphere" should then be a near vacuum with the odd experimental airplane whizzing by, right? Well, not quite. Deep and dark resounding thumps lend the track a rather subterranean quality, while intricate delaying on the high flicks and screeches bubbles along calmly and reservedly until breaking out in a frenzy at regular intervals. Add a monomanically pounding noisy kick to the mix and the overall mood is rather eerie and menacing. Only towards the end does the complexity diminish, leaving an airy drone that could, conceivably, be considered "stratospheric". Feel free to ignore the associations the titles arouse, though, and enjoy these two tracks for what they are: masterfully crafted pieces of hazy dub electronica from the increasingly prolific German school.
