Music Drama starts with one of the strongest songs I've heard in quite a while: Am I Your Friend, a song that reminds one of Nick Cave. Mind you, I did not say "It sounds like a Nick Cave song"; but it's simply that curious combination of madness and excellent songwriting where Am I Your Friend gains the level of Nick Cave's best songs — a level that causes the listener to turn the volume up several times during the song (note the second half of the third minute) in a way only Led Zeppelin's Achilles Last Stand does. But where many records cause one to doze off after the first strong and powerful song, Music Drama keeps pace.
My Little Cheap Dictaphone is — or at least should be — Belgian's new music sensation. Dictaphone is basically homo universalis (or for our less informed readers, "renaissance man," or for our even less informed readers, a person (male or female) with many talents who uses all of them) Redboy accompanied by (usually) two other musicians. Twenty-two year old Redboy is, however, unmistakably the mastermind behind Dictaphone. He not only wrote the music and lyrics for 13 of the 14 songs, he sings on all of them and plays an average of 4.5 different instruments on each song. The first and second instruments are usually acoustic and electric guitars; three, four, and four-and-a-half are chosen from a large collection, which includes bass, e-bow, kazoo, organ, drum machines, eggs, and several telephones. Fortunately, this hodgepodge of instruments and toys does not lead to a "gadget type" of music, although Redboy has a tendency to use a distorting microphone a little too much (the same could be said of dEUS' debut album).
Where the first couple of listens to Music Drama seem to reveal some weak songs, a few additional listens teach us that it's more like a few weak moments of our ears needing to adjust to the music, and not so much Dictaphone's songs. One of the few "easy listens" on the record is Get High, the closest thing to a rock ballad, complete with organ, violins, strings, cello, and tambourine. This song sounds so familiar, it must be a fake, or a timeless tune. All the other songs are, on the other hand, very original but also coherent. References? Sparklehorse, Muse, Tom Waits, the missing link between Mike Patton's work with Faith No More and with Mr. Bungle, and to a lesser extent, Motorpsycho, Bob Mould, Manic Street Preachers, and the Evil Superstars. That means avant-garde, state-of-the-art rock accompanied by classical instruments, drum computers, and samples. Breaking and jumping songs, as well as more repetitive (this is not an insult), constant songs. Am I Your Friend is the song to beat for the pole position of Best Song of 2002, and Music Drama the record to beat for the pole position of Best Record of 2002.
