When Shania Twain sang the immortal words "that don't impress me much",she obviously wasn't talking about the music of Nought. Because if there's one thing you can say about this Oxfordian outfit's instrumental mix of old-fashioned prog-rock with bits of jazz, folk, avant-garde, and even classical music, is that it is impressive. Not only because of the seemingly endless array of instruments (and their players) they dragged into the studio - besides the usual guitar, bass, and drums we can hear piano, organs, cellos, all kinds of percussion, clarinet, saxophone, violin, bassoon, and more, and usually we can hear it all at the same time - but mainly because their debut album is a 50-odd minute collection of complicated riffs, constant breaks, and surprising turns that leaves you with barely enough space to catch your breath. Nought manage to take their highly advanced technical skills - guitarist James Sedwards was runner-up in the British National Guitarist Of The Year competition in 1998 - and turn them into something that's much more than just showing-off and impressing other musos. A bit overwhelming at times, maybe, but very impressive.
