"Anyone who isn't dead, or from another plane of exisistence, would do well
to cover their ears right about . . . now."
If you decide to follow the advice at the start of Inhuman, you would miss John
Longstreth's amazing piece of drumming in the intro. And that would be a
shame. The same goes for all those who didn't make it through opener Larvae
Of The Lie.
Yes, Origin is a death metal band, complete with grunting and song titles like Meat For The Beast and Implosion Of Eternity. But Origin also deliver an extremely interesting album with Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas. This band consists of accomplished musicians who create nine tracks filled with music that is both innovative and technically brilliant, without ever becoming a solo wankfest — the entire album lasts just under 30 minutes. Especially Longstreth stands out, being not just another metal drummer who can play at 400 BPM, but one who can also do something interesting at that speed. Another thing that makes Origin stand out is that, as far as I know, it is the first band to develop a form of close harmony grunting.
Like with most technically advanced music, appreciating Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas takes some time. At first it may sound like an impenetrable, thick wall of sound. But after a few listens, the music's structure — and with it, its great quality — becomes clear. Even the grunting will grow on you. So check out Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas, not only if you are one of the few thousand technical death metal fans, but also if you like Tool or GYBE! or Aphex Twin. Some music is too good to be stuck in a genre ghetto.
