In Germany, Panacea is a star. After numerous drum 'n' bass 12-inches, and a handful of uncompromising loud music, he slowly acquired the reputation of drum 'n' bass badboy. But Panacea is more than just that. Together with artists like DJ Spooky, Techno Animal, and Oval, he made some great abstract techno for Frankfurt label Mille Plateaux. Furthermore, he made a few 12-inches of fine, hectic street-electro as Bad Street Boy. With Underground Superstardom, Panacea is re-entering the world of drum 'n' bass. Not to show how radical his interpretation of d&b, dark wave, and industrial still is. No, this record is a journey back in time. A journey to the time before drum 'n' bass conquered the London underground. Underground Superstardom is, in a way, a celebration of the directness and dancebility of the old breakbeat rave sound. But it also shows how fresh this music still comes across. Especially if you compare it with contemporary drum 'n' bass productions. Panacea is a master in energetic music with a sense of humour. Roaring sirens, deep, dark bass lines, pitched-up vocals, and hectic amen breaks. Very energetic and great to dance to. But relevant? Yes. The fact that Panacea makes a drum 'n' bass record that sounds exciting, for a change, addresses the most important issue in the d&b landscape: How on earth did drum 'n' bass get so boring? Good question. But before answering, make sure you fully enjoy Underground Superstardom.
