Without any warning, the new Paradise Lost album came out. Their last one, 'Host', wasn't exactly a commercial success, but artistically they leaped forward onto a more electronic road, which was paved by Depeche Mode and Sisters of Mercy. That new sound suited Paradise Lost well, but many of the more die-hard metal fans couldn't take the overdose on synths and sampled rhythms. I don't know if it was record label pressure or a concious choice by the band members themselves, but 'Believe in Nothing' is much heavier and guitar-orientated than 'Host'. The biography on their website says it all: "With their latest studio album 'Believe In Nothing' (the eighth to date), the band has amalgamated the sound of their last three albums, bringing back their trademark riffing as well as incorporating new ideas and some of the electronica seen on their previous LP 'Host'." And that's a realistic presentation of the sound on 'Believe in Nothing', which was produced by Jon Fryer, who also produced acts like Nine Inch Nails and Stabbing Westward. Composer Greg Mackintosh still has an incredible ear for catchy melodies and riffs, using clichéd-to-death chord structures as if it is something completely new. I have to admit that it still works for me, but I also have to admit I have a weakness for Paradise Lost (Hey now, everyone's allowed to have one or two...). Singer Nick Holmes still is the same pessimistic cynic he always was, but his vocals have improved once again, sounding like Dave Gahan and James Hetfield at the same time. It fits the songs just right, but the blend of Depeche Mode, Stabbing Westward, and Metallica is a known one (And is it just me, or did they listen a lot to Seigmen when they made this record?). Every song sounds catchy, they all could be released as a single (Where is that enormous hit anyway? It has to be possible with these songs.), but for an entire album the songs sound a bit too much alike. So, nothing new here, but still a good album and suitable for anyone who likes dark, gothic rock.
