Now I know this is quite an old album, but I want to indulge myself and write something about it. 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is Pavement's second album, the first being 'Slanted and Enchanted'. Although Pavement came up during the early nineties they aren't a grunge band (let me just emphasise this). Overall, this album is quite relaxed, but there's a twisted edge to it. Lines like "look around, our second drummer drowned" are normal. And of course there is the infamous Smashing Pumpkins-bashing verse in 'Range Life', for which they were thrown off the Lollapalooza tour by - you guessed it - the Smashing Pumpkins. Highlights on the album are the aforementionted 'Range Life', 'Gold Soundz' and of course 'Cut Your Hair', a song about the fickle music business, ehm, I think, you can never be sure with Pavement songs. The lyrics are just word associations, they create a mood without really saying anything. Is Steven Malkmus singing 'career, career' or 'Korea, Korea' during 'Cut Your Hair'? I haven't got a clue, great song though. Although 'Terror Twilight' was quite a hit last year, I really think 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain' is a better album.
