There is that most special breed of producers who are always working in the
shadows, honing and perfecting their skills and sounds, keeping their
distance from the whims and hypes of the maddening crowds that could only
interfere with their own very personal visions. As a fixed corollary this
kind of artist rarely ever releases a bad record. Legends like Octave One,
UR and Drexciya have it. Newcomers like E.b.e., Rocket, Kenneth Graham and
Halo Varga possess that quality. Chris Simmonds of Cross Section is another
one. Aubrey has got it too. Moodymann and Theo Parrish have it by the ton
loads. Balihu(s Daniel Wang simply oozes the attitude. And Pete Moss has
got it too.
Having debuted on Josh Wink's classy Ovum stable, he, quietly
but consistently keeps on making better records. Basically Moss produces
pretty straight deep house. But he layers it with such diverse elements as
lazy, dubby beats, distant echoes of sultry women's vocals, little snippets
of progressive and trance, warm bass-lines and a most particular gift for
conjuring up a mysterious and dreamy nocturnal atmosphere that lend his
music a truly spatial quality setting him apart from the rest of the
American deep house movement. Lately Moss has been spotted in the vicinity
of San Diego's Siesta and 16B's Alola, which can only mean that the man is
indulging in the minimal, funky tribal of tech-house. Which isn't too bad a
cause if it results in records like this. 'R U Serious' is the catchiest
pick here. Its simple driving bass-line, traditional stabs and perfect
little voice sample is pure sexy dance music bliss. But the meditative and
descriptive tight tribal beats of 'Make It Werk' and the panoramic
synthlayers of the, at fist inarticulate but later on steadily mounting
tensions of 'Desert Lightning' are just as rewarding. A perfect for Pete.
