RL Burnside is in bad health. Although: Considering his lifestyle and past, it is a miracle he still has a health. The Mississippi bluesman and his music are like a force of nature, unstoppable and forever going in circles. So on 'Burnside on Burnside' you'll find the same tracks you found on the previous Burnside albums: 'Shake 'Em on Down', 'Goin' Down South', 'Jumper on the Line', and of course 'Snake Drive'. Not that it matters; on this live album RL and his band are simply smoking. The tempo seems to be higher than on the studio albums, resulting in more of a rock-type feel. It's as if RL, slide guitarist/adopted son Kenny Brown, and drummer/grandson Cedric Burnside decided to steal back what Led Zeppelin stole from them. The mesmerizing grooves go on and on and on and drag you in deeper and deeper, until there's no escaping them. Blues, not dance music? The people who were in the Crystal Ballroom on Burnside Street in Portland, Oregon, on January 21st will tell you differently. And because of this excellent clear, yet raw-sounding, live record you can also find out yourself. Which is a good thing, because RL Burnside can't tour that much anymore, and this way we still have a substitute to 'Shake 'Em on Down' to.
