It's a grim world. Fundamentalists want your soul to burn in hell. The government wants surveillance cameras in your home. That hip web design firm you used to work for ceased to exist. So did WorldCom, in which you invested all your savings. Grunge lite and industrial pop rule the airwaves. It's like it's 1981 all over again.
So "someone needs to start a fire here." Gotham! is a radical-left attack on the '90s hedonists that control dance floors worldwide, by a band inspired so much by the likes of Gang Of Four and Public Image Ltd. that they named themselves after a song by the latter that had the number of the former in the title.
Post-modern retro hipness at its worst, certainly — one can easily guess the accompanying non-haircuts of the bandmembers — but no one gives a fuck anymore as soon as the bassline to 'Dance To The Underground' starts pumping. Producer it-boys of the moment DFA make sure the floor stays filled, even when the 'Pipe Bombs' explode in the 'New Disco' and snipers are hiding when you exit from 'The Movies'.
You just keep dancing. Keep dancing through the recession, through the war, through the corruption. Keep dancing until the revolution comes.
