Years back, I was a member of the jury for a local band competition. One of the performing bands already had a large following throughout Europe. The Maastricht M-Town rebels Right Direction came, played, and conquered. Their raw oi!-punk rock 'n' roll was brilliant. Nevertheless, a cover made their show the best of the day: Rose Tattoo's Scarred For Life. Although they never were as big as fellow countrymen AC/DC, Rose Tattoo had a tremendous influence on the rock landscape. Their pure rock, injected with lots of southern influence and a dirty touch, was highlighted on albums like Rock 'N' Roll Outlaw (1981) and Scarred For Life (1982). After years of silence, Rose Tattoo opened for Guns N' Roses on their 1993 tour, after Gunners Axel and Slash asked them to. What followed were a couple of compilations and a live album.
With pure rock being very popular, Rose Tattoo are back with Pain, a new album with sixteen rock 'n' roll songs. After all those years — they debuted in 1978 — Rose Tattoo still sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Nazareth trying to play hard rock. Resulting in nearly sixty minutes of pure rock 'n' roll excitement. The best tracks on Pain are nearly as good as their early eighties material. Opener Black Magic, slow southern rocker The Devil Does It Well, up-tempo Someone To Fuck, and brilliant rock song Satan's Eyes are as exciting as those of new rockers The Hives and White Stripes. Only the few, slow, sleazy southern rockers do irritate after a while. Nevertheless, Pain is pure rock 'n' roll as it was meant to be. And still is.
