After the release of their first EP, the 'Sham Pain' EP, in the Fall of 1999, Seedling was widely seen as a new upcoming talent. But after that release nothing much happened. So their status changed into the best-kept Dutch alternative guitar (violin) band. This one-boy, three-girls formation from Amsterdam has existed for four years now and has finally made a follow-up to that 'Sham Pain' EP, with the album 'Elevator Tourist'. And this is an excellent album! Seedling continues their quest where they stopped it last time. The opener 'Every Match Must Crash and Burn' isn't only musically full of emotions; also, the lyrics are intense. This is a tension that appears throughout the album. Another repeating element is the freshness and catchy aspect of the songs. This is caused by the voice of singer Marg van Eenbergen, but mostly by the very fine use of the violin by Suzanne Linssen. The violin is not only used as a musical colouring, but as a full basic instrument. And if we are talking instruments, check out that bass playing in the song '27 Hours', a very catchy song with a special flavour, just like the second song 'Silver & Blue' has its own very special flavour. Seedling don't play full-on during the first six songs, but I guess the gear they are using is high enough to make the songs sound pretty good when played on stage. After a moment of peace in 'Oxygen', the tempo slows down and the music gains intensity, but does not became less emotional. I reckon this album is very catchy as well as very beautiful. It will need some listening to get the message. Listen to those lyrics, and read the song titles, and you might figure out that mood that makes it so very special.
