Combining a sheering punk voice, noize, and the languid beats and bleeps of Primal Scream's Screamadelica, The Cooper Temple Clause made an energetic debut album. The heavy Britrock songs are preluded or backed by some electronic resonance for the songs to burst out. Apart from the music, it's the looks and attitudes that make the aura of The Cooper Temple Clause red-hot. It's a typical British product for that matter. The problem with rock groups wanting to integrate electronic influences in their sound is the trap of falling into clichés. Most of the time, they're not as familiar with the electronic toys as they are with the traditional guitar/bass/drum input. Notwist's Neon Golden (2002) is a great example of how it should be done, but then again the German group got a techno pioneer to join them. A more appropriate comparison would be Xtrmntr (2000) by Primal Scream, on which that soon-to-return group easily melted electronic music and rock together without feeling uncomfortable.
Although The Cooper Temple Clause wants us to believe they're into sampling as much as into guitars, the latter have the upper hand on this album. It must be said that rockers on See This Through And Leave such as Who Needs Enemies and Filmmaker ("I would?ve made us a killer movie!") are irresistible and take you back again to that Britrock era of the mid-Nineties. At the other extreme point, there's the excellent 555-4823, which is the only real electronic song on the album; it makes you think of a more friendly Aphex Twin. Its subtlety is a relief in between all the straightforward rock songs. And in the end, that may be the problem with this debut. With all of its swamp rock, there's too small of a roll to be played for the samplers, synths, and laptops, which could've given the songs a more subtle sound. It ends up being a bit too one-dimensional, which really is a shame.
