What is even worse than a bad act? In my opinion, that would be a bad act that makes too much use of stereotypes, comes up with a stupid album title, and, worst of all, produces an incoherent album. Theatres des Vampires is a black/goth metal act that has all ingredients mentioned above.
It wouldn't have been so bad if, in any case, this album had been coherent. At first this album just seems to be a bad rip-off of Cradle of Filth. Not that I think that is a good act, but at least they have a thing of their own. Suicide Vampire (what a stupid title this is) opens with a sort of stereotypical black/goth metal song, and just when you get a bit used to it, the band comes up with a song like 'Queen of the Damned,' which is more — much more — a pop song than the other songs. There is too much contrast between this song and the others, and due to that, this album doesn't sound as a whole.
It is not just this track; there are other moments on this album that are in too much contrast with the overall sound. And it is not just variety; this album is just poorly put together.
I sure hope Theatres des Vampires won't curse me for this review. But if they are as truly goth as their music, I don't need to worry.
