French mystery act Unknown Mysterioso (yes, we get the point) deliver nine tracks of smoothly produced, idiosyncratic techno. That is to say, if we call everything that's based on a 4/4 beat (as opposed to, say, drum and bass or electro) techno, this album falls into that category. But then so do Kit Clayton and Vladislav Delay, so that's not saying much. All it means is that if you're one of those Warp-heads who bores easily when confronted with a certain amount of monotony, this isn't going to be your favorite album of all time. It'd still be quite worth your while, though, for the thump is sprinkled with more than a fair helping of leftfield bleeps and dismembered samples, all of which receive a generous amount of delay to make them sit comfortably in the mix. Add to that some extra driving percussion in the, shall we say, German manner, meaning relentlessly hammering congas and such and even, on one occasion, a rhythm track that sounds like it was cunningly stolen from the vaults of Thomas Brinkmann's studio, and you have an album that presents a rather unique mixture of fashionable electronics. Whether this mixture is a successful one is hard to say: it all sounds refreshingly earthy, mostly because the sounds aren't washed out in an ocean of hiss and reverb, but it also lacks conviction. The net result, then, is an album that's a collection of cleverly crafted tunes put together by a very skilled producer, but very little else. Which is too bad.
