'Tears fall like rain/Sweet music is to blame', it whispers in opener 'Sound of the Samba'. Sounds nice, doesn't it? Mellifluous string sections and sexy horns flood your way, supported by an array of gentle acoustic guitars, tropical flutes and high-spirited vibe-chords. But most of all by Davies' soothing and sexy vocals singing the various joys and tristesses of our loves and lives. But, the other way around, these ever so friendly and sweet sounds also compose the one possible weakness of this release. Because, believe me, there isn't a bad song or wrong arrangement to be heard and the very smooth Big-city-night-club-style 'Blues for you' is indeed a far more credible alternative for the plastic soul of George Michael but after a while it all becomes a little bit too much of the same cosiness, warmth and Bossa Nova fairy tale sounds. Which isn't to say that this isn't a promising release, but I would recommend it in small doses. That is, except when you finally have arranged that long-expected date with the woman or man of your dreams and you want to convince her or him of the seriousness of your intentions with a first dance that propels you both into the heavenly bliss of physical love. In that case, United Lovers of the World, using this lúúúved-out silver circle of music will increase your chances by a light-year. One for the lovers and the losers alike.
