Original Sounds of the Zion is the eighth record by
dub-collective Zion Train. Besides recording albums
and touring Zion Train also run their own label called
Universal Egg. One of the youngest bands on this label
is Headmix, who fuse dub, folk and dance into a sound
of their own. While Headmix is without a doubt
influenced by Zion Train, this new Zion Train album
also seems to be slightly influenced by the Headmix
sound.
One of the best tracks on Original Sounds of the Zion
is Ella’s Melody. Which is a very Headmix like dub
song with a nice tune played on a melodica, which is
typical for the Headmix. Besides that there is a guest
performance by the Headmix bassplayer on the track
Love Revolutionary.
The songs on this new album are mostly in the Zion
Train tradition of dub/reggae with dance and acid
influences. Thus songs like Zion High, Hailing up the
Selector and King of Sounds and Blues are a fusion of
brass, toasts and electronics. The result is a very
addictive and danceble mix.
There are also a few more housy tracks on Original
Sounds of the Zion. A song like Do U See Love is even
bit on the 80’s house/dance side. Beatmass on the
other hand is built around some fast breakbeats.
Although there is not something surprising new to be
found on this album these songs make up for another
fine and danceable record. In any case this is a nice
album to listen too on a warm day and no doubt these
new songs will invite you to dance at their next gig.
