The esoteric artwork that comes with 'Switzerland Heritage' doesn't reveal anything, but while listening to this wonderful record, you'll hear a wide variety of influences - almost everything from the creepiness of Robert Johnson to the ambitious riffs of Radiohead, in fact. But it's when you listen really closely to the imaginative music of Swedish-rooted fans of American music - David-Ivar Herman Düne, Andre Herman Düne, and their new drummer Neman - you'll also notice that there's a smattering of traditional folk and blues underneath a melancholic and relaxed vibe of quietly desperate vocals, violins, Silvertone guitars, horns, and harmonicas. Although the words and music are unremittingly dark and mysterious, 'Switzerland Heritage' comes as an exciting and breathtaking journey. This release continues to build upon the sound Herman Düne created on their previous albums 'Turn off the Light' and 'They Go to the Woods', but the overall production is much tighter, and the beautiful arrangements are even more memorable than on their previous efforts. Standout tracks include the lead-off track 'Two Crows', 'Little Architect', the almost danceable 'The Speed of a Star', and 'Martin Donovan in Trust', a creepy tale that would even give nightmares to someone like Nick Cave. The end of 'Expect the Unexpected, the last track on the album, means you'll have to start all over again. 'Switzerland Heritage' is especially worth a listen for fans of Will Oldham.
