I don't really have a problem with hype. Sometimes it's strange to see that everyone is listening to the same thing when there's music around that's so much better. But on the other hand, hype can cause the audience to focus on a decent band instead of the marketing mechanism behind mega-selling sh*t like Bon Jovi, or whatever. Then I'd rather have the scenario of everyone listening to Is This It or White Blood Cells, because it's nice to see that there are some high-quality releases that get the attention they deserve.
Unfortunately, hype is also a way for magazines to sell a lot of copies. When the potential buyer sees "The New Sensation" on the cover, they become curious. After the hype succeeds, the record really sells, and the magazine with the same band on the cover gets sold because it is hot! Still, there are a lot of instances of hype in which I can understand how people get caught up in it. It's just a kind of understanding that a band really has some potential, even though you'd rather have the audience listen to other releases because you think they' re better . . . but that's just the way it goes.
However, this time I really can't stand the "choice" of a lot of magazines. Months before the release, we were told that The Vines were going to be the next big thing. People already started naming them the Australian Strokes, and the cooperation with producer Rob Schnapf (also Beck, Foo Fighters, Guided By Voices) couldn't be a bad thing. Well, they have nothing to do with the Strokes. Not only does the music make you think of Nirvana, the album also hasn't got any Is-This-It-quality. The Strokes cling to you immediately, but most of the time The Vines only irritate you. Like with annoying vocals on songs such as Highly Evolved, Get Free, and Outtatheway! And I won't even start about the obligatory and long-winded closer 1969. Only the ballads Autumn Shade and Homesick seem to be good enough . . . but People! Does this HAVE to be the big hype of 2002? This must be one of the worst hypes ever.
