Keith starts to look and sound pretty down, so, in order to change this, we start talking about happiness:
"I'm happy with my life, with the gift of evolution,
understanding and experience. You see, I'm really not after
anything in this world except for a very interesting,
orgasmic experience. I came into this world with nothing and
I'll leave with nothing and it's just the way it is. I try
my best and I think I am doing that. My reward is sharing,
touching and helping people, let them feel stronger.
I'm happy about a lot of things, I'm happy to be alive, man!
I'm sad as well, but my happiness will grow. I'm happy about
waking up today and breathing another breath."
Amsterdam is now Caputo's hometown, talking about it immediately raises a big smile. "When I first came to Holland I was like: wow, I'd like to move here. And now, two/three years later, I am blessed with the experience of living in such a extravagant and friendly city. It's like Manhattan, that's why like it so much. Manhattan gave me that buzz of...", and Keith blows in the air, "...so many different people. And what's so cool about Holland, there's just so many different people."
Your fans love you for what you did in LoA, do you think
they will like your new work?
"Ít's unfortunate if I loose some people but there will be new people.
But there will be new listeners and if they don't like the
tenderness of how I expressed rock 'n roll this time around, I really don't care. This is my therapy instead of going to a shrink.
If they like it, they just like it, if they don't...I can't
force it down peoples throat. Everyone has their own
opinions and I accept that."
The first single that will be released from the new album is
'Selfish', to be released on October 18th.
"It's an okay song, but it's three years old.
I can't wait till the song is really, really big and people
are thinking I'm gonna be playing that song, I'll come out
on the show and give 'em some totally different and it will
be so uncooperative." Keith laughs. "Just think of Cobain,
how many times he had to play 'Smells like teen spirit', I
saw the show once and he was supposed to do the song, and
they didn't do it! It was great. That's why I loved Cobain,
because he had that care-free attitude."
When I asked Keith if he'd ever met Kurt Cobain, he quietly
nodds. Suddenly: "I know him though. Well, I think I do, I
think we all do. I can relate to him."
Recently Caputo stated that he experienced the last period of time in LoA as 'being on a train on the wrong track and unable to get off'. "There are good and
bad memories. It's like a marriage, I still love them but
I'm not in love with them."
So you wanted to do your own thing? "Yeah, I need to
live my truth. You can't smother or cage a human being.
It's against the law of nature."
Keith understands this issue needs some extra words, and explains:
"If you were my lady and we were together for a few
years, and I loved you and all of that stuff. But you just
weren't happy, you would be able to come to me 'cause I'm
approachable and understanding, and I'd push you off wanting
you to find your happiness.
If you love someone you need to let them go. You can't hold
them.
You can't create false interpretations, and making things
look more attractive then they really are.
This life is a quest for happiness, a journey towards a
higher enlightenment.
My real preoccupation of life is growth and understanding and finding and sharing
bliss. And my happiness. To help myself and in the process
help others, that's what life's all about, we're all doing
the same thing, really".
Do you like the Internet? "I am not a computer-freak, but I
check my E-mail every day. I don't own a computer but I
have three E-mail addresses!
It's cool, if there's a certain lady that you like, it makes
things a lot easier to be like 'Hey, can I have your E-mail
address?' rather than getting all personal like 'Can I have
your number?'. So if the girl has no interest in you, she
doesn't have to answer you".
So what do you think about downloading songs from the
Internet, the MP3's? "I think that's cool!"
Would you want the
songs from 'Died Laughing' to be available for downloading?
"I want my music just to be out there as much as it can be out there. That MP3-thing is gonna knock the distribution companies out and record companies don't like that. But if I
wasn't signed, if I could do it all over again, I'd definitely start my own record company".
"I just bought Queen, News Of The World, the new David Bowie Collection and
Mutations by Beck.
Beck is definitely an inspiration to me, he is great. He has
a lot of good ideas. I hope to meet him one day, we've got to
do something together".
Others Keith would like to be working with? "Nigel Godrich, he's a
producer, he did 'OK Computer' and he produced the latest Beck,
Mutations. I find his producing, his mixing and his whole
studio thing outrageous and I love his work.
Or William Orbit, who just did the new song for Madonna
(and Keith starts to sing 'Beautiful Stranger': 'na na na na
Beautiful Straaanger'). That producer is great, he's just
funky, him and me, that would be a very odd combination. It would be
like Andy Warholl and Jennifer Lopez!"
Can you name a few of your favourite bands, performers or artists? "Beethoven, John Lennon, The Beatles as a whole...I'm searching......any kind of artist? Christopher Walken, Jim Morrison, Andy Warholl, Cobain, it's a forever list."
And the near future? "I will tour Europe first till the new
year, I'm gonna do all the acoustic things here in Holland and in
Germany.
The current acoustic shows are just to create some intimacy,
before I hit the road with my six piece live band.
In December I will celebrate Christmas with my family and
I'll rehearse with the band and prepare them for extensive
touring and then: come out. Open some wounds man!"
