"There are no pros in prostitution / There is no rest in restitution / But there’s always ins to the institution / I keep mute in my mutilation / Put up no fuss in my frustration" (‘Shun’). Foetus, alias SFOTW (Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel), alias Jim Foetus, alias J.G. Thirwell released at least a dozen records since 1980 under at least half as many aliases. If I would included side projects (‘Wiseblood’ and ‘Steroid Maximus’ for example) I would have to double his releases. Next to this he did some art work for magazines, remixed and produced tracks for people like Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Pantera, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers; and cooperated with bands such as Einsturzende Neubauten, Marc Almond and Nick Cave. Now, ‘Flow’ is released: an hour of jazzy industrial rock music. We can hardly say N.I.N., Ministry and Einsturzende Neubauten (including hoarse vocals) heavily influences Foetus – the question is: who does who influence? Let’s say it’s a process of mutual influence. ‘Mandelay’ sounds like Ministry’s ‘Psalm 69’ (1992). It’s also this Ministry record that is echoed most in Foetus’ ‘Flow’. But be careful, Foetus is far from copying Ministry. Indeed, ‘Quick Fix’, ‘The Need Machine’, and ‘Mandelay’ could have been songs on a Ministry record released in the early 1990s. Songs like ‘Cirrhosis of the Heart’, ‘Grace of God’, and ‘Suspect’ however may start out like little jazzy intermezzo’s, they are the real treasures on ‘Flow’. Songs that not so much capture the influence of others at the front of industrial, but that capture future influences for music throughout industrial. Foetus zigzags wildly from seductive samba to grinding steely futuristic stomp, bebop to world music from a world we'd rather not inhabit. Violin solo’s, Wagnerian guitar lines, and loungy themes is not something you would expect on an industrial record. And for the lyrics: Foetus swims between genius and ‘seem-like-quotes’. Is this postmodernism? To cite Lyotard: Foetus is incredulity toward metanarratives. For that reason: "Dial 1-900-FOETUS".
